Join our crew of volunteers

We offer lots of ways to get involved so volunteers can make a direct impact on their communities in ways that match their capacity, skills, and interests while meeting other amazing harm reductionists near them.

Here's how it works

1

Join our volunteer database

If you are not already part of our database, then fill out the new volunteer form below. If you’ve volunteered with us before, you’re probably in our database already! To find out, check your email inbox (including your spam folder!) for your login info, or you can email/text the volunteer team at [email protected] or 602-229-5362.

2

Schedule a volunteer shift

Once you’ve joined our database, you can sign up for a shift using the calendar below! See below for brief descriptions of the volunteer shifts available.

3

Attend an orientation

Orientations are open to all and are the best way to learn about how to get involved in our work. Orientation is required for outreach volunteers. You do NOT need to attend orientation in order to be participate in kit-making or in-office support.

About the shifts

Book a time online to pick up supplies from the Tempe office using the calendar below; assemble kits at home; return assembled kits to us within one week. Below are notes about the sign up process:

  • Kit pick-up or drop-off: Choose whether you’d like to pick-up or drop-off supplies. If you’re dropping off AND picking up, select both. If neither, select other.
  • Number of kits to pick-up: choose a number in multiples of 100. 100 kits can take 1 person anywhere between 2-4 hours to complete. If you are new, start with 100.
  • Kit Type Preference: some kits include supplies for safer drug use. If you are not comfortable with these supplies, please select “basic safety kits only”.

Come into our Tempe office to support with kit-making, inventory counting, and organizing alongside SPW staff and other volunteers.

Join one of SPW’s bimonthly kit-making parties! These events are open to people of all ages – please just RSVP so we have an accurate headcount when preparing supplies and food.

Attend our next volunteer orientation

Our next two-part volunteer orientation is coming up! Join us to help keep our people safe.

Black, Indigenous, and Latine people are strongly encouraged to apply.

“SPW has created a community of folks who are merging passion and compassion to increase safety and empower people who use drugs in our communities. I have volunteered in many spaces in many states over the years and SPW is my favorite!”

Volunteering can look like...

Sitting on your couch, binge-watching TV, and putting together kits that can help save lives
Joining our staff on outreach and talking to folks on the street, at parks, and at community events about harm reduction
Participating on a fundraising committee
Writing thank you cards
Facilitating conversations with new volunteers at orientation
Helping to administer rapid HIV and Hep C tests
Driving around listening to music and delivering supplies to volunteers
and more!

Share your time, grow your skills

Our volunteers are a huge source of support and we strive to make the experience meaningful for you. Some benefits you’ll love are:
We’ll even sign off on your hours for community service requirements!

“Volunteering at SPW is an amazing way to stay up to date on ways we can help keep our communities safe. You get to work with an organization that puts people first, helping you become an ally by ending stigma, in a way that is meaningful, and rewarding.”

Come as you are

When you volunteer at SPW, you don’t have to hide any part of yourself or pretend to be different. Our volunteers span the spectrum of lived experience and we value their unique insights. We don’t conduct background checks, drug tests, or require any kind of state ID. Our roles are specific, simple, flexible, and easy to accomplish so you can show up how you want and when you want.

“I love that volunteering with SPW doesn't feel like you're there to work, they make volunteering fun, and easy. The staff is incredibly appreciative, and supportive - they make you feel a part of the SPW family. I volunteer with SPW because I believe harm reduction is an awesome way to help keep our loved ones safe and put an end to overdoses.”
