Phoenix

Mathew “Maty” H de Valenzuela serves as Director of Finance & Controller at Sonoran Prevention Works, where he oversees financial operations, strategic budgeting, grant compliance, and long-term fiscal planning. With experience spanning nonprofit finance, corporate leadership, education administration, and nonprofit governance, Maty brings a comprehensive and pragmatic approach to SPW’s financial infrastructure. Prior to joining SPW, Maty served as Chief Financial Officer for a construction firm, leading multi-million-dollar budgets, project cost controls, financial forecasting, and internal system modernization. He also worked as a school administrator, managing educational budgets, state compliance requirements, and department operations. In the nonprofit sector, Maty has served as treasurer for a nonprofit board and as a legislative liaison, where he navigated policy advocacy and stakeholder engagement. These diverse roles honed his expertise in organizational leadership, systems design, regulatory navigation, and mission-driven financial stewardship—capabilities he now applies to strengthen SPW’s financial stability and operational effectiveness. At SPW, Maty manages financial reporting, audits, payroll governance, CER and grant expenditure tracking, and coordination across multiple state, federal, and private funding streams. He has modernized financial workflows, enhanced transparency, and built structured systems that enable program teams to maintain compliance while maximizing community impact. Maty’s work is guided by a deep commitment to equity and overdose prevention. He believes that rigorous financial stewardship is fundamental to sustaining SPW’s life-saving services and ensuring resources reach the communities who need them most.
